Nintendo Switch 2 Requires Day-One Update for microSD Express and 3D Audio Features

Nintendo 2 Day One Update

The Nintendo Switch 2 requires a day-one update to enable microSD Express card support, its packaging confirms. This feature was leaked months before Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 in January 2025. microSD Express offers speeds up to 985 MB/s, much faster than UHS-I cards used in the original Switch.

The new format supports up to 128 TB storage, while UHS-I cards are limited to just 2 TB. Unlike the original Switch, this feature needs a software update and won’t work straight out of the box. Nintendo acknowledged this in April 2025 but did not initially share a rollout date for the update. Recently, Famiboards user pelusilla6 shared a Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle photo confirming the launch-day update.

Switch 2’s Day-One Update May Enable More Than One Feature

Full 3D audio support also requires a post-launch update, Nintendo previously confirmed. While 3D audio works with headphones or TV by default, internal speakers need an extra update. Nintendo’s packaging doesn’t confirm if this speaker patch will be available at launch. However, earlier statements suggest the 3D audio and microSD Express update may come together.

The Switch 2’s microSD Express support is not optional and won’t function without the software patch. Although Express cards fit physically, the system won’t recognize them without the update. The new console includes 256 GB of internal storage—eight times more than the original Switch. This added space should be enough for several launch titles without needing immediate expandable storage.

Pricing and Availability

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025, at $449.99 in the United States. The Mario Kart World bundle costs $499.99 and includes the game, which otherwise costs $79.99 separately.
