Discord Orbs: New Virtual Currency Now in Beta Testing

Discord Tests New “Orbs” Virtual Currency With Select Users
Discord is launching a virtual currency called Discord Orbs, now in limited beta for selected users. This currency is earned by completing Discord Quests, which involve engaging with sponsored content and brand promotions. Previously, users earned decorations or in-game perks. Now, Orbs can be redeemed in the Discord Shop for new rewards. These include badges and even 3-day passes for Discord Nitro. More digital items are expected to appear over time. At the moment, only a small group has access. A wider rollout is likely in the coming months, pending test feedback.
Discord Orbs Join a Year Full of Major Platform Changes
Discord has seen rapid updates in 2025. One new feature, Ignore, lets users mute others without fully blocking them. It hides messages and interactions but keeps communication technically open, promoting a softer approach to moderation. While some praised this, other changes weren’t as welcome. March’s UI overhaul drew major criticism from longtime users. Complaints included visual clutter, slower performance, and a less intuitive experience, sparking backlash across communities.
Discord Also Rolls Out Age Verification in Some Regions
Alongside Orbs, Discord is now testing a new age verification system in the UK and Australia. Users must either scan their faces or upload an ID through a QR code. This confirms legal access to certain features. Discord says no data will be stored. All verification info will be deleted after use, addressing privacy concerns. As with other updates, the response has been mixed. Still, Discord appears committed to building a safer, monetized platform. It remains to be seen how well Discord Orbs will be received when released to all users later this year.
