PlayStation Plus Profitability Hits New High Ahead of 15th Anniversary

Sony Gives Update on PlayStation Plus Profitability

Sony Sees Growth in Premium Tier for PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus is showing strong growth and profitability, especially as Sony celebrates the service’s 15th anniversary on June 29. VP Nick Maguire shared new insights into PS Plus, highlighting that most subscribers now prefer the higher tiers. The Premium tier saw 18% growth in the past year. According to Maguire, PS Plus is growing faster than ever, especially as 81% of subscribers are now using the PlayStation 5. The shift to three subscription tiers in 2022 helped Sony attract more players by giving them flexible pricing and access options. Sony now offers PS Plus Essential at $80, Extra at $135, and Premium at $160 per year. Many gamers are opting for Premium.

Sony Confirms Higher Tier Engagement and Future Plans

Sony’s move to split PlayStation Plus into three levels has exceeded internal expectations, especially with user engagement at its peak. Earlier in June 2025, SIE CEO Hideaki Nishino said price hikes had no negative impact on subscriber growth. Players still see value. When asked if more price hikes were coming, Maguire declined to comment, instead confirming Sony’s plan to keep investing in PS Plus. Sony says nearly 40% of users are now on the Extra or Premium tiers. That’s a major shift from previous years of Essential dominance. Although Sony hasn’t confirmed how many total subscribers PS Plus has, they shared that users logged over 2 billion hours in 12 months. PlayStation Plus continues to avoid day-one releases, unlike Xbox Game Pass, since Sony’s titles still sell strongly at launch.
