Black Myth: Zhong Kui Announced, But Sun Wukong’s Story Will Continue

Black Myth: Zhong Kui Announced, But Sun Wukong’s Journey Isn’t Over
Game Science has officially revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui, but fans of Black Myth: Wukong shouldn’t worry—the tale of Sun Wukong will return. CEO Feng Ji confirmed that while the team is currently focused on Zhong Kui, Wukong’s story is far from finished. The studio may revisit it as a sequel or expansion, though exact plans remain unclear.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui Revealed at Gamescom
Many fans expected Black Myth: Wukong DLC at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Instead, the final trailer showcased Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The upcoming title is a single-player action RPG that will release on PC and current-gen consoles.
Zhong Kui, the new protagonist, is rooted in Chinese folklore. Known as a ghost-catching deity, he travels between Hell and Earth. Gamescom host Geoff Keighley described him as a powerful spirit hunter whose legend will shape the game’s narrative.
Why Game Science Shifted Focus
Game Science originally planned post-launch DLC for Black Myth: Wukong. However, during development, co-founder Yang Qui asked CEO Feng Ji if the team would prefer to create something new instead of additional content.
This conversation sparked the idea for Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Feng Ji explained that the studio wanted to break free from fixed formulas, experiment boldly, and essentially start from scratch with a fresh project.
Sun Wukong’s Return Is Certain
Despite the shift in direction, Feng Ji reassured fans that Sun Wukong’s journey isn’t over. The world of Journey to the West, filled with demons, gods, and monsters, will eventually be revisited by the studio.
He explained, “Like all of you, I love the world of Journey to the West. Sun Wukong’s legend will return, in a more complete and solid way, once it’s properly prepared.”
Given Black Myth: Wukong’s massive success on PS5 and PC, it’s safe to assume that Game Science will continue exploring the Monkey King’s tale in the future.
Available on More Platforms
In the meantime, new players can experience Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox, as it officially launched on August 20. Whether Game Science chooses to expand the original game or create a direct sequel, fans can be certain that Sun Wukong’s legacy is far from finished.
