GameStop Combats PS5 Price Increase With Special Offer

Sony has announced a $50 price increase for all PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States. This move affects every model, including the PS5 Digital Edition and the powerful PlayStation 5 Pro.

GameStop, however, has stepped in with a limited-time deal. The retailer is offering gamers an additional $50 trade-in bonus, which helps offset the new price hike.

PS5 Price Increase in the United States

On August 20, Sony shocked players by raising PlayStation 5 prices across the United States. Starting August 21, each console will cost $50 more.

The PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony’s flagship model, now retails for $749.99. Sony explained the increase was due to a “challenging economic environment.” The company confirmed that PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged in price.

Sony also clarified that these changes only affect the United States. For now, there are no new global adjustments.

GameStop’s $50 Trade-In Deal

While Sony raised prices in the US, other regions already saw increases earlier this year. Thankfully, American players can still save through GameStop’s trade-in program.

GameStop announced that players will receive an extra $50 toward a new PlayStation 5. The offer is valid with trade-ins of a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch.

This promotion is available until August 23, 2025. Gamers interested in the deal should act quickly before it ends.

Why the Price Hike Was Expected

Many fans were surprised by the sudden increase, but the signs were already there. Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, hinted at this possibility in May.

He explained that tariffs between the United States and China could reduce Sony’s operating income by $684 million. At the time, the company said it was considering passing that cost to customers.

With global inflation and rising manufacturing costs, the increase was almost unavoidable.

What’s Next for PlayStation 5 Owners

Although prices are rising, current PS5 owners still have much to look forward to. Several highly anticipated games are set to release in the coming months. Upcoming titles include Gears of War: Reloaded, Lost Soul Aside, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. In September, players can also enjoy Hell is Us, NBA 2K26, Borderlands 4, and Silent Hill F. Despite the price changes, PlayStation fans will continue to see strong releases throughout 2025.
