Sony is taking fighting games seriously again with Project Defiant, a retro-inspired controller with modern upgrades.

Sony Revives the Arcade Spirit with Project Defiant

PS5 Arcade Controller

During the June 2025 State of Play, Sony revealed a surprising new accessory—Defiant. It’s a wireless arcade-style fight stick designed for PS5 and PC users. The controller pays homage to old-school arcade gaming with a nostalgic layout and sleek design.

Fighting game fans often seek precision. Arcade sticks offer faster input accuracy than traditional controllers, which is why Project Defiant is generating buzz. The fight stick is wireless but also supports wired play for those who prefer zero input delay.

Packed With Modern Features and Retro Style

Project Defiant features mechanical switches, a DualSense-style touchpad, and interchangeable restrictor gates. These elements enhance its performance during competitive sessions.

Sony claims the wireless performance is ultra low-latency thanks to PS Link technology. For players attending tournaments or offline events, the stick also comes with a carry case and lever gap for safe transport.

Launch Set for 2026 With More Info Coming Soon

Although no specific release date has been revealed, Project D is expected to launch sometime in 2026. More details will likely follow at upcoming events or blog posts from PlayStation.

This new accessory joins Sony’s growing list of custom PS5 controllers, like the DualSense Edge and third-party options. However, it aims to win over the dedicated fighting game community with its arcade-inspired design and modern tech.

Love the nod to classic arcades with this reveal. Curious how the wireless latency compares to wired during high-level play—especially with games like Tekken or Street Fighter where every frame counts.

Totally agree—the retro nod hits all the right nostalgia notes. The wireless latency question is a solid one, especially for frame-sensitive titles like Tekken and Street Fighter. Sony mentioned “ultra-low latency” with PS Link tech, but we’ll have to see how it performs in real-world tournament settings. Hopefully, we’ll get more technical breakdowns closer to launch!
