PS4 Reportedly Losing Key Services in 2026 as Sony Shifts Focus to Next-Gen Consoles

Sony’s PlayStation 4 may soon start losing some of its major online functionalities. According to reports, several PS4 services are set to be discontinued in 2026, signaling Sony’s accelerated move toward fully ending PS4 support.
PS4 Nears the End of Its Era
The PlayStation 4 will celebrate its 12th anniversary on November 15, marking over a decade of gaming milestones. While the console continues to receive minor updates in 2025, Sony has gradually been reducing resources allocated to the PS4. This shift indicates that the gaming giant is now preparing to focus entirely on newer-generation platforms like the PlayStation 5 and the rumored PlayStation 6.
Six Major PS4 Services Reportedly Being Discontinued
According to insider reports from Tom Henderson via Insider Gaming, Sony has notified developers about plans to remove access to certain legacy PSN features in 2026. These changes will apply only to new PS4 titles, while existing games will retain access.
The list of affected PS4 services reportedly includes:
-
Activity Feed Web API
-
Shared Media Web API
-
Title Small Storage (TSS)
-
Title User Storage (TUS)
-
Users and Profiles
-
Word Filters
These APIs are used for essential functions like player data storage, sharing media, and managing user profiles. Losing them will make it far more difficult for developers to create or maintain new multiplayer or live-service titles for the PS4.
PlayStation Plus Also Phasing Out PS4 Games
This move follows Sony’s earlier announcement that PlayStation Plus will begin phasing out PS4 titles starting in January 2026. After that, PS Plus Extra and Premium will no longer prioritize PS4 games, gradually removing existing last-gen content from their libraries.
Combined with the upcoming service restrictions, it’s becoming clear that 2026 marks the beginning of the end for PS4’s active support.
The Final Days of PS4 Support
With developers losing access to APIs like Title User Storage and Users and Profiles, new releases for the PS4 will become increasingly rare. According to reports, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 might be the last major AAA title to launch on the system.
Sony is expected to provide security patches and minor stability updates for a while longer. Full-scale support could end when the PS6 debuts, possibly around late 2027.
A Legacy That Shaped Modern Gaming
Despite this upcoming sunset, the PlayStation 4 remains one of Sony’s most successful consoles, having sold over 117 million units worldwide. Its influence on both single-player storytelling and multiplayer experiences has shaped the modern gaming industry.
PS4 players can look back proudly on a console that defined a generation of gaming innovation.

Whoa, 2026 already? Sonys really pulling the plug on the PS4, not just turning it off at the socket but dismantling the whole toolset! Cant believe they’re cutting those API lifelines – soon developers wont be able to store user profiles or share media without Sony breathing down their necks? Good riddance to bad rubbish, maybe the PS5s APIs wont be so bloated! R.I.P. PS Plus library fillers and the glorious days of easy TSS access. Still, it had a blast run, over 117 million! Almost makes you want a PS6 just to see it die.

Haha, couldn’t have said it better! Sony’s definitely speeding up the PS4 sunset, and cutting those APIs is a major sign. It’s wild thinking how far the console went — over 117 million units is no small feat! The PS5 (and maybe even the PS6 ) will have big shoes to fill for sure.
