Santa Monica Studio’s Mysterious New Game Might Leave God of War Behind

After dominating the action-adventure genre with God of War, Santa Monica Studio appears to be charting a bold new path. A recent job listing from the studio reveals some curious details — hinting that their next title may differ drastically from the mythological brutality fans have come to expect.
Could Santa Monica’s Next Game Be a Brand-New IP?
For over 20 years, Santa Monica Studio has focused exclusively on the God of War series — evolving it from its Greek roots in 2005 to the Norse mythology reboot that reached its peak with God of War Ragnarok in 2022 and its follow-up DLC Valhalla in 2023.
Now, the studio’s job postings suggest a possible pivot. Multiple listings mention a brand-new IP, and one particular Cinematic Artist role includes an eye-catching requirement: applicants with martial arts, acting, or dance experience.
That’s not your usual job listing. While such experience might support general cinematic design, it could also point to a game that focuses on performance-driven combat, fluid movement, or even stylized, choreographed action — a serious departure from Kratos’ grounded and heavy-hitting fighting style.
A New Direction with a Familiar Visionary
Speculation around this mystery project has only intensified with reports that Cory Barlog, the creative mind behind God of War (2018) and God of War 2, is leading the development. Barlog previously teased a second project in development following Ragnarok, adding weight to the theory that something big — and different — is on the way.
Other job listings describe the new title as a third-person action game — but that’s where the similarities with God of War might end. If rumors are true, the project could be built for the next-gen PlayStation 6, suggesting a potential release window in 2027 or 2028.
When Will We Learn More?
With Sony likely preparing for future hardware announcements and Santa Monica Studio’s track record of cinematic storytelling, this new IP could debut during a major PlayStation showcase — possibly as early as 2026. One thing’s for sure: fans should temper expectations of more mythological mayhem and brace for something fresh.
