Ubisoft Announces Layoffs at Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Entertainment Studio
Ubisoft has announced that it will cut several positions from Red Storm Entertainment, the studio behind multiple Tom Clancy franchise games. This decision follows ongoing layoffs across the entire video game industry, including Ubisoft’s closure of its Leamington, UK studio earlier this year. Fortunately, this round of layoffs won’t shut down Red Storm Entertainment entirely.
Red Storm Entertainment Confirms 19 Employees Laid Off
According to a report from IGN, Ubisoft confirmed that 19 employees have been laid off from Red Storm Entertainment. In an official statement, the publisher described the move as a cost-cutting measure and part of a targeted restructuring effort.
Red Storm Entertainment was founded in 1996 with help from Tom Clancy himself. In recent years, the studio mostly provided support to other Ubisoft teams. Its latest major project, The Division: Heartland, was unfortunately canceled last year.
Layoffs Reveal a Shift in Ubisoft’s Focus
Compared to recent mass layoffs from companies like Microsoft, the loss of 19 jobs may seem minor. However, it’s still concerning when talented developers lose their positions in any part of the industry. Red Storm’s nearly 30-year legacy, with roots tied directly to Tom Clancy, makes this decision even more disappointing.
Even so, fans of Tom Clancy titles may not have much to worry about. Popular games like Rainbow Six Siege are developed by other Ubisoft studios, such as Ubisoft Montreal.
Industry Trends and Ubisoft’s Future
These layoffs come amid reports that young Americans are spending less on gaming. While correlation doesn’t always mean causation, the industry’s financial tightening likely connects to changing consumer spending habits.
Ubisoft and other publishers appear to be cutting costs to better align with current market trends. Time will tell if these restructuring efforts succeed in helping the company meet modern gamers’ needs more effectively.
