Rumor Suggests Xbox’s Next Handheld Will Function Like a Nintendo Switch

Microsoft’s rumoured handheld Xbox console could include one of the Nintendo Switch’s most defining features — a docking station. According to recent reports, this long-awaited Xbox handheld may offer seamless switching between handheld and docked gameplay, making it a versatile choice for gamers on the go or at home.

Two Xbox Handhelds in Development?

The Xbox handheld buzz has been growing since Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed last year that a portable console was in development. Reports now suggest that two different handheld devices are on the way:

  • ASUS-Manufactured Xbox Handheld – Potentially launching by late 2025.

  • Microsoft’s First-Party Xbox Handheld – Rumored for 2027, this device could include more advanced features.

Docking System: A Big Win for Portability and Flexibility

According to Windows Central, Microsoft’s own handheld console will come with a docking station, similar to what the Nintendo Switch offers. This would allow players to easily switch from handheld mode to a traditional console experience on a big screen — something fans have long wanted.

Additionally, the device is rumored to:

  • Use Qualcomm chips (as hinted by recent job listings).

  • Be compatible with games purchased from the Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, and Steam.

This wide compatibility could open the door for running PlayStation titles on an Xbox device, via Steam — a first in gaming history if true.

⚠️ As always with leaks and rumors, take this info with a grain of salt until Microsoft officially confirms it.

When Will the Xbox Handheld Launch?

There’s no confirmed release date yet. However, sources like Jez Corden suggest an announcement could happen in 2025, with a potential launch in 2027. Some leaks — including those from the FTC trials during Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition — hint that the device might even be pushed to 2028.
